WEEKLY MESSAGE – March 22, 2024

WEEKLY MESSAGE – March 22nd  – Fr. Cederberg

Palm Sunday is coming up, and it always feels to me like such a whipsaw of emotions.  The service starts with a blessing of the palms and the triumphal procession.  “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”, the people cry.  Then, in a few very short minutes, we begin the readings of the passion when this time we cry, “Crucify him, crucify him!”  My, how quickly the mood changes.

Yet I have to admit that my attitude towards God is often like that.  When things are going my way, I am jubilant and say, “Yes, way to go, God!”  Jesus is on my side.

When things turn against me, however, I am quick to doubt.  “Take him away.  Surely there is a better way.”  My heart is fickle and turns on a dime, in keeping with the status of my own comforts.

Perhaps that is why we go through this whole process of Lent and Holy Week.  We live out the drama in the life of Jesus, but also reflect on that drama being played out in our own hearts.  We love him, and yet we don’t.  We believe in him, and yet we doubt.  “Forgive us, Lord, for we know not what we do.”

While we may know that Easter is coming, to fully understand it we have to experience the dread of Holy Week.  There we are invited to go through the valley of the shadow of death together.  We will hear again the story of the Passion this year, and we will again be given the opportunity to honestly plumb the conditions of our own hearts for the bitterness, unforgiveness and selfishness that reside there.  Let us pray to the Jesus of the cross to bring us healing and strength.  Let us ask him to help us, so that we will be ready to genuinely celebrate resurrection and the new life it brings.
